The work of Wilhelm on nacre-like composites gets published in PNAS!
Composites containing mineral bridges and platelet asperities similar to nacre are produced. The damping performance of the synthetic composites surpasses many biological and man-made materials, even though nacre has a much more perfect microstructural organization. Our nacre-like composites display a loss modulus 2.4-fold higher than natural nacre and 1.4-fold more than highly dissipative natural fiber composites!
