Afterwork practice on team building from the workshop on learning to communicate better.
Great talk and discussions with Kaline Furlan of @TUHamburg on her work of capillary driven #AdditiveManufacturing assembly of colloids combined with ALD!
Great COST Action #ESR training school! What a pleasure to meet so many young talents and share our work on 3D printing of #bioinspired #composites! Thanks for having me over Sofia Teixeria, Jose Sena Cruz & Tasos Vassilopoulos !
Sungi graduated! With his thesis on Large Scale 3D-Printing with long fiber reinforced polymer, he could def cross the river with a #3DBenchy boat made with @ceadgroup's extruder (we're told the print takes long so we'll have to be a bit more patient!)
CONGRATS SUNGI! 🥳🚀🤖

New paper out in advanced science! We show that you can dramatically suppress Eddy currents when insulating single graphite particles in composites. We establish a new record value of Q in our diamagnetic levitating sensors. What a cool collaboration with our Delft colleagues in PME!
What an honour to have the opening keynote of the Adhesion conference! Some wonderful chats with colleagues as well as hard debates on origins of toughness and the formation of interphases. Glasgow is an amazing city!
Great to see our collaborator Joseph in Toulouse! ISAE SUPERAERO has an impressive campus and it was really nice to discuss with Dr Duriez about his work on ecologically efficient topology optimization. He even calculated the CO2 emission of his simulations to obtain his PhD results – impressive stuff!
Amazing to have Dr Jemma Rowlandson and her colleague Charles de from Uni Bristol. They do very interesting work on design of experiments to target experiments with complex and inter-related input parameters. Very inspiring and we eagerly will look to apply these principles to our signalling research.
Despite some bad weather, and lack of training, Kunal made it over 4 passes to earn his Alpenbrevet Gold. We like to work hard, and play harder!
Congrats to our friend Georgy Filonenko on becoming assistant professor in materials science 3mE.
Congrats Ingo, on graduating his master thesis on printing of engineered living materials.
August 2022
Welcome Natalia! She will be joining us as a new PhD student on the LichenBlades project to protect wind blades against erosion using architectured living materials!

The work of Wilhelm on nacre-like composites gets published in PNAS!
Composites containing mineral bridges and platelet asperities similar to nacre are produced. The damping performance of the synthetic composites surpasses many biological and man-made materials, even though nacre has a much more perfect microstructural organization. Our nacre-like composites display a loss modulus 2.4-fold higher than natural nacre and 1.4-fold more than highly dissipative natural fiber composites!

Our new paper demonstrates a versatile approach to shaping difficult to print materials. One of the exciting prospects is that we demonstrate shaping of extremely precise and complex geometries with living materials! Simona presented the paper in Advanced Materials and the spin-off Sallea at the Pro2Tech Delft annual event in the Oude Bibliotheek Delft.

With his pioneering and exciting work on Direct-Ink Writing of cellulose producing bacteria, Kevin aced his master thesis defense. Really happy for him, and cherry on cake, we’re lucky to have him stay around for a few more months with us as a researcher with the spin-off Sallea.
Caroline wins Best Poster at the Delft BioDay 2022 for our work on 3D-printing LCP into self-reinforced composites!
Berend graduates! his work on 5-axis printing hydrogen pressure vessels from liquid crystal polymers was very well received. We will miss him but we’re so excited for him with his next adventure at TreeComposites!
